What Is Jordanian Arabic?

Jordanian Arabic is a colloquial Arabic dialect spoken throughout Jordan and by Jordanians living across the region and the wider diaspora. With millions of native speakers, it is one of the most widely recognized and commonly understood varieties of Levantine Arabic.

Jordanian Arabic is a subdialect of Levantine Arabic, the colloquial form of Arabic spoken across the Levant. This region spans the Eastern Mediterranean and includes Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria, though broader definitions sometimes include parts of Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus, and Iraq. The Levant is home to more than 44 million people and is known for its cultural richness, linguistic diversity, and long historical traditions.

Jordanian Dialectal Variants

Like other Levantine dialects, Jordanian Arabic contains several regional and social variations. The primary forms are often grouped into urban (madani), rural (fellahi), and Bedouin dialects, each influenced by local history, geography, and community traditions.

Despite these variations among regions and communities, Jordanian Arabic remains widely understood across the Arab-speaking world. It is easily recognizable to speakers throughout the Middle East and the Arab diaspora.

Why Learn Jordanian Arabic?

Jordan’s culture is rich, diverse, and deeply rooted in its long history, unique geography, and regional significance. Situated at the crossroads of the Middle East—connecting the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, and North Africa—Jordan has been shaped by numerous civilizations and empires over thousands of years. Because of its central role in the region and its cultural and historical importance, Jordanian Arabic is widely spoken, easily understood, and highly valued across the Arabic-speaking world.

Jordanian Arabic shares many similarities with the dialects spoken in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria, making it an integral part of the larger Levantine dialect family. It is also relatively close to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), the formal version used in media, literature, and official communication. This makes Jordanian Arabic an excellent choice for learners who want a dialect that is both practical for daily conversation and helpful for building a foundation in written and professional Arabic.

Learning Jordanian Arabic opens doors to meaningful communication, cultural understanding, and deeper engagement with one of the most historically significant regions in the world.

Benefits of Learning Jordanian Arabic

Our Summer Jordanian Colloquial Arabic Course Levels on Offer

1. Beginner Jordanian Colloquial Arabic

The Beginners Jordanian Colloquial Arabic course is designed for students with no previous Arabic language experience of any kind. This course will introduce students to basic concepts such as the Arabic alphabet, writing systems, fundamentals of grammar, phonetics, vocabulary, and common colloquial phrases. The Beginners course will create a strong linguistic foundation from which students can leap into the diverse, complex, and ever-expanding world of spoken Jordanian Arabic.

2. Elementary Jordanian Colloquial Arabic

This Jordanian Colloquial Arabic course continues where the previous course left off, building on the student’s foundational Arabic language knowledge. It introduces new vocabulary and slightly more complex grammatical rules into the curriculum, along with regular reading, writing, and speaking exercises.

Upon completing this course, students will be able to converse, read, and write about elementary subjects such as shopping, asking for directions, and expressing preferences. The elementary course is also a good choice for those who have previously studied Arabic at a beginner’s level but want to learn the Jordanian dialect specifically.

3. Intermediate Jordanian Colloquial Arabic

The Jordanian Colloquial Arabic intermediate course will introduce students to a more immersive curriculum than the previous levels. This will entail venturing into the Jordanian community of Amman to communicate with native speakers and complete everyday tasks. Students, for example, may be instructed to purchase items from a Jordanian market, order from a restaurant, discuss preferences on a certain topic, and engage in other activities.

Students will also be introduced to subjects that touch upon specific issues, such as culture, art, and politics, and will learn the vocabulary needed to converse about these topics in a concise and well-informed manner.

4. Advanced Jordanian Colloquial Arabic

This Jordanian Colloquial Arabic course will combine elements of all the previous course curricula, maintaining the immersive nature of the intermediate level while expanding into more complex reading, writing, and spoken materials. Additionally, students will conduct research in the community of Amman on various subjects.

When all these methods and materials are combined, students will be able to establish a firm understanding of and grammatical competency in Jordanian Arabic. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to articulate their thoughts and opinions on complex matters such as politics, history, the environment, and the arts of Jordan.
