Program Location – Jabal Al-LweibdehAmman

This area is distinguished by its central location in the capital, approximately a 15-minute walk from downtown and west of the Abdali district, home to Abdali Boulevard, the largest modern market in Jordan.

Jabal Al-Lweibdeh attracts diverse groups of people, including Arabs and Westerners, who come to enjoy the neighborhood’s social life and cultural energy. It is considered the cultural and social center of Amman and is home to numerous art galleries and tourist bazaars. The area also offers many cafes and restaurants serving both local and international food.

Many foreigners who come to Jordan to work or study choose to live in Jabal Al-Lweibdeh, as they find it a peaceful and comfortable place that blends modern life with Jordanian culture and the history of the region. Every street and building in the neighborhood features murals with meaningful stories, and many of its streets are bustling with visitors who consider Al-Lweibdeh their favorite spot in Amman because it reflects the fragrance of the past and the charm of traditional Jordanian life.

What Is Levantine Arabic?

Levantine Arabic, also known as Ammiyya (العامية) or the Shami dialect (اللهجة الشامية), is the Arabic dialect spoken in countries like Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine. It features distinct sounds, vocabulary, and grammar rules that set it apart from other Arabic dialects.

Why Learn Levantine Arabic?

  • As one of two dominant spoken dialects, Levantine Arabic has approximately 44 million native speakers worldwide. By learning this dialect, students will have many opportunities to engage with the people, politics, histories, and cultures of the Arabic-speaking world.
  • Whether motivated by travel, recreation, business, personal interest, family lineage, or simple curiosity, individuals studying Levantine Arabic can connect with this diverse and influential region.
  • Through studying Levantine Arabic dialect, students will have the opportunity to interact with individuals and communities across Arabic-speaking countries and the Arab diaspora, including those situated in their own communities back home!

How Are Arabic Classes Conducted?

Our summer Levantine Arabic classes are conducted in small groups, with students of similar skill levels placed together in groups of up to 10.

These classes are intensive, immersive Arabic courses that focus on speaking in small groups. Students work on group projects, learn a new language together, and make new friends from Jordan and around the world!
